James Fortune made a horrible mistake two years ago. Now, he is opening up to talk about what finally changed his life for the better. Not stopping there, he also tells women signs to look for and how to leave a abusive relationship safetly.

The Grammy nominated singer, who is a son of a pastor, never saw his father abuse his mother. He evens admits that he never saw himself ever being an abusive man, labeling them as “cowards.” However, Fortunes makes a parallel with the notion that if you do not have control of your house you are not being the man God wants you to be. The Gospel singer states, “That’s a lie.”

He does admit he felt that he lost control of his household and would intimidate, and be physical with his wife. He would occasionally use the kids to make her feel bad about herself by saying things like, “A better mother would do things differently.” Fortune denies the allegations of “broken bones” or “throwing a bar stool” at his wife. Although, he did physically removed her from their bedroom, which forced him to plead guilty to third degree felony charge of assault – family violence.

“Someone doesn’t have to hit, grab or push you to abuse you. Putting you down, intimidating you or making you afraid are all abuse,” Fortune told Essence magazine.

We have seen domestic violence being an issue recently in the NFL, Hollywood and even in our Churches. We know it took a lot of courage for Fortune to open up about his mistakes as well as try to make them right with his family and community.
