When students at Columbus City Schools return to class Wednesday morning, there will be a number of new academic initiatives and changes to programs and buildings.

The changes and new initiatives include:

1) All 7th graders will have the ability to take career-oriented computer engineering courses to learn computer code and how to design their own computer games for tablets and cell phones.

2) Ecole Kenwood French Immersion School and Columbus Spanish Immersion Academy will open with innovative interior designs, unique shared learning spaces, and new technologies.

3) Northgate will reopen as Northgate Intermediate School serving 4th and 5th-graders from Alpine and Avalon elementary schools.

4) A new transportation center in the former Moler Elementary School building will allow the district to better serve students and families with a modernized and centralized operation.

5) Expanded mentoring efforts will provide all freshmen and seniors in CCS high schools an opportunity to connect with college counselors and adult-volunteer mentors. Mentoring efforts will also expand in three middle schools. The middle schools include Columbus City Preparatory School for Boys, Sherwood and Yorktown.

6) New Pre-Kindergarten seats will be added through the Early Childhood Education Program. The district will also launch the new Linden-Park Neighborhood Early Childhood Education Center in October.

7) Columbus families and the community will have access to news, information, and district data through the Digital Dashboard on the website and the new Columbus City Schools Mobile App.
