CLEVELAND — Six years ago today is a day that shocked a city and captured the attention of people around the world, Three women who were held captive for 10 years inside a home on Cleveland’s Seymour Avenue escaped.

“Help me, I’m Amanda Berry. I’ve been kidnapped and I’ve been missing for ten years and I’m here, I’m free now.”

It’s been six years since the world heard those words from Berry, one of three girls who went missing for years and were finally freed on May 6, 2013 from the house of horrors on Seymour Avenue.

Berry, Gina DeJesus and Michelle Knight were held captive for a decade by a man named Ariel Castro until a neighbor, Charles Ramsey, heard Amanda calling for help, pulled the door open enough for her to escape and call 911.

News 5’s John Kosich arrived on Seymour Avenue not long after news broke that three women were rescued from the home.

Ramsey spoke to Kosich about the rescue in an interview that went viral around the world.

“I heard screaming, I was eating my McDonalds, I come outside and I see this girl going nuts trying to get out of her house” he started. An internet sensation was about to be born.
