A proposed bill could allow Florida high school students to take a religious studies class next school year.

The bill was filed last week and it’s called House Bill 195: The Study of the Bible and Religion.

The religion class wouldn’t be required, but it would be offered as an elective to high school students in grades 9th through 12th.

The course would include lessons from the New and Old Testaments of the Bible along with Hebrew scriptures.

The bill says the school would still be required to follow state and federal laws to “maintain neutrality” and would have to accommodate all diverse religious views of the students at school.

If passed, the bill would go into effect on July 1.
