According to Fox 28, police said they had no choice but to shoot a man after he made a “threatening gesture” with a handgun in the direction of a SWAT team.
The man was pronounced dead shortly after the police shooting.
The fatal gunfire came at 12:10am Sunday, more than an hour after Columbus Police arrived to find the suspect shooting rounds into the ground outside 1342 West State Street. A police spokesman says when officers pulled up, the man ran inside the home and barricaded himself.
No hostages were involved in the incident. A hostage negotiator still responded to the scene in an attempt to communicate with the suspect, but the attempts were ultimately unsuccessful.
Columbus Police have not said how many SWAT officers fired on the man. No SWAT officers ever made attempts to enter the home.
