Fans of Robert Townsend’s “The Five Heartbeats” will get an in depth look inside their favorite film, courtesy of the director himself.

Townsend will be featured in an upcoming documentary that will center on how he made “The Five Heartbeats.” The film, which was released 25 years ago on March 29, 1991, is loosely based on the lives of several recording artists, including The Dells and The Temptations, and depicts the rise and fall of a Motown-inspired group.

In addition to co-writing “The Five Heartbeats” with Keenen Ivory Wayans, Townsend directed and starred in the movie with Leon Robinson, Michael Wright, Harry Lennix, Tico Wells, Hawthorne James, Roy Fegan and Diahann Carroll.

“Right now, I’m working on a documentary about how I made the film, the journey behind from the very beginning when I first started saying to Keenan, ‘Hey, I want to do this script after ‘Hollywood Shuffle.’”

For Townsend, the project has been a long time coming as fans have come to him over the years with questions regarding everything about “The Five Heartbeats,” from casting the film’s characters to editing.
