As her estranged husband James Fortune serves his five-day jail sentence for assaulting her, Cheryl Fortune is getting back to doing what she loves: singing.

The domestic abuse survivor, who once accompanied her abusive spouse on tours, is now acting as a background singer on Kirk Franklin’s “20 Years In One Night” tour.

“Honored to be on the stage with Kirk Franklin and this amazing team,” wrote Cheryl on her Instagram page after performing during the sold-out Philadelphia concert at Tower theatre Wednesday. “My heart is grateful!! It’s a joy!! Incredible people!!!”

Since October 2014, when James struck Cheryl with a wooden stool, threw her against a wall and kicked her at their home in Stafford, TX, the talented vocalist’s world has been turned upside down. The outward façade of happiness was stripped away. The gospel industry success disappeared and their family was ripped apart.

Now the man with whom she built a life and label, FiyaWorld Music Group, must stay away from Cheryl, complete five years of probation, five days in jail, 175 hours of community service and a “batterer’s intervention” program.

In Cheryl’s victim impact statement, read in court by a prosecutor on March 8, she wrote, “I hope in all of this you get help. Serious help.”
