According to reports, 35 states covering over 80 area codes made it mandatory to switch to ten-digit dialing. This means that people living in these zip codes must dial the three digit zip code along with the seven digit phone number in order for phone calls to connect. This may seem like an unusual and large overhaul, but this has actually been a practice for a lot of areas in the country for nearly thirty years.

This is a practice regulated by the FCC. The FCC wanted to clear up three digit numbers to provide availability for a National Suicide Prevention Line that is set to launch in July of 2022. The number to dial will be 988. See the full list of zip codes that switched over and more of the FCC’s plans here.
