The IRS is turning over big tax debt offenders to private debt collectors.
Taxpayers with long overdue federal taxes will soon have to answer to private debt collectors.
The agency will send offenders letters this month, ahead of turning their names over to the private agencies. Only people with longstanding tax debts going back several years will be contacted.
The IRS is warning of scams surrounding this new process. If you are on the list of debtors, the IRS will give you the name and contact information of the agency handling your debt.
