A Cook County, Oregon teenager as been diagnosed with the Bubonic Plague, after she returned from a hunting trip in Morrow County, Oregon. According to officials, the young girl contracted the disease from a flea bite. She fell seriously ill a few days later and was rushed to the hospital. The Bubonic Plague, or otherwise known as the “Black Death,” is a rare but serious bacterial infection that’s transmitted by animals or insects and requires urgent hospital care.

The Black Death was one of the most devastating pandemics in human history, resulting in the deaths of an estimated 75 to 200 million people and peaking in Europe in the years 1346–53.

There were only 5 cases in the US in 2014.
