Legendary musician Chuck Berry has died. He was 90-years-old.
The St. Charles County Police Department in Missouri confirmed on Facebook that they found the iconic singer unresponsive.
“St. Charles County police responded to a medical emergency on Buckner Road at approximately 12:40 p.m. today (Saturday, March 18),” the police department said in a statement.
“Inside the home, first responders observed an unresponsive man and immediately administered lifesaving techniques. Unfortunately, the 90-year-old man could not be revived and was pronounced deceased at 1:26 p.m. The St. Charles County Police Department sadly confirms the death of Charles Edward Anderson Berry Sr., better known as legendary musician Chuck Berry.”
“The family requests privacy during this time of bereavement, ” they concluded.
According to Rolling Stone, born in St. Louis on October 18th, 1926, Charles Edward Anderson Berry learned to play blues guitar as a teenager and first performed at his high school talent show. By the end of the 1950s, the singer who helped define the rock and roll genre had eight top 40 hits:” Maybellene” (Number 5), “Roll Over Beethoven” (Number 29), “School Day” (Number Three), “Rock & Roll Music” (Number Eight), “Sweet Little Sixteen” (Number Two), “Johnny B. Goode” (Number Eight), “Carol” (Number 28) and “Back in the U.S.A.” (Number 37).
Entertainment Weekly noted that “Berry’s onstage showmanship, guitar-playing, song arrangements, and lyrics were hugely influential on artists such as Elvis Presley, the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, and the Beach Boys.”
In 1986, Berry was inducted Berry into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
