Fighting depression? Christian singer and former Destiny’s Child member, Michelle Williams,
knows what you’re going through and is offering up some advice: Don’t withdraw from life!
“Depression likes to keep you secluded, inside your home,” she tweeted. “Go outside and do
your best to enjoy how beautiful it is!”
The GRAMMY® Award-winning “Say Yes” singer ended the social media message with the
hashtag, #IKnow, confirming her intimate understanding of depression—something Williams has
previously talked about.
Her battle began at age 15 and eventually, she realized she needed to get help to get herself
together.
“I had some amazing therapy, because see, sometimes what we do is we also isolate ourselves
from people that do love us,” said the 36-year-old Broadway star in an interview with Essence.
Williams says the sessions assisted her in reintegrating into family life and finding a sense of
balance, normalcy, and community. “It was like getting back connected with people that honestly
love me,” she said, adding, “That’s what really strengthened me again.”
In a 2014 interview with BET’s “Lift Every Voice,” the Rockford, Illinois native, who got her start
singing in the Church of God In Christ (COGIC), also stressed the importance of resisting
negativity in the battle against depression.
“If the thoughts that enter your mind don’t bring peace, happiness, joy, think on those things that
are from above,” Williams told host Fonzworth Bentley.
