Columbus hosted the Jingle Bell Run where runners of all ages took part in the fundraiser for Arthritis research.

This year Columbus resident Joanna Helon is the national honoree. Helon said she hopes by bringing more awareness creates better treatment and understanding among people.

“What you don’t see is how hard things are getting dressed or making dinner or the fatigue and how much that affects people with arthritis.”

She said this day is all about building a more hopeful tomorrow for those suffering from arthritis.

“When I was first diagnosed with arthritis when I was 9, I was put on gold shots and baby aspirin. There have been great strides in treatment for people with arthritis in using drugs that modify the disease. So people diagnosed today won’t suffer some of the damage I’ve suffered over the last 30 years. I’m hopeful in the next 30 years there can be investments in research and we can find a cure and great treatments for people with arthritis,” said Helon.

Central Ohioans helped to raise the goal of $215,000 in the Jingle Bell Run. Nationally more than $6-million was raised this year for the Arthritis Foundation. To learn more, click here: http://www.arthritis.org/get-involved/jingle-bell-run/
