President-elect Donald Trump found himself in hot water after those enrolled in his non-profit real estate program, Trump University, took legal action against him for fraud. According to a group of former students, the school lied about its curriculum and teachers at the program were not chosen by Trump himself, as advertised. Trump has decided to pay a $25 million settlement in the cases related to Trump University. The money will be divvied up amongst all of the students who sued. “I am pleased that under the terms of this settlement, every victim will receive restitution and that Donald Trump will pay up to $1 million in penalties to the State of New York for violating state education laws,” said New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman. “The victims of Trump University have waited years for today’s result, and I am pleased that their patience — and persistence — will be rewarded by this $25 million settlement.” Trump took to Twitter to share his sentiments about the settlement. “The ONLY bad thing about winning the Presidency is that I did not have the time to go through a long but winning trial on Trump U. Too bad!” he posted. Read more.

Standing Rock Protests Escalate into Stand-Off

The protests at the Standing Rock reservation in North Dakota have taken a turn for the worse. According to reports, demonstrators were hit with percussion grenades, rubber bullets, and teargas as they protested against a pipeline’s installment near the reservation. The incident erupted when 100 protesters tried to move two trucks that formed a barricade on a bridge, ultimately prompting a standoff between police officials and locals. “They were attacked with water cannons,” said Standing Rock Sioux tribe member, LaDonna Brave Bull Allard. “It is 23 degrees [-5 °C] out there with mace, rubber bullets, pepper spray, etc. They are being trapped and attacked. Pray for my people.” The Morton County Sheriff’s Department claimed that things escalated when protesters became “very aggressive.” Since the protests began, there have been nearly 400 activists arrested. Energy Transfer Partners are almost done building the pipeline, however, they still need a permit to start the drilling process under the Missouri River. Read more.

Confederate Statue in Louisville to be Removed

A confederate monument in Louisville, Kentucky is in the process of being taken down. According to Mayor Greg Fisher, it’s one of the first of many efforts to rid the community of representations of the Civil War and Southern Confederacy. “We’ve started disassembly (of) the Confederate Monument,” said Mayor Fisher. The statue, which is 121 years old, will be moved to a town called Brandenburg that hosts portrayals of the Civil War. The statue is currently near the University of Louisville, which made several students and faculty members uncomfortable. The removal project cost $400,000. Local African-American Councilman David James is happy that the statue is being taken away. “I’m personally glad to see it go,” said James, who represents the district the monument is in. “To me, it’s a vestige of the Civil War, of slavery, of all things that represent oppression to people of color.” Read more.

Kanye West Rants About Beyoncé and Jay Z at Latest Show

Chicago rapper Kanye West’s tour is becoming more about his rants than his music. While performing at Sacramento’s Golden 1 Center on Saturday, he raged about the issues he has with a list of people. Two of those targeted were Beyoncé and Jay Z. “Beyoncé, I was hurt ‘cause I heard that you said you wouldn’t perform unless you won Video of the Year over me and over ‘Hotline Bling.’ Now don’t go trying to diss Beyonce. She is great. Taylor Swift is great. We are all great people. We are all people. But sometimes we be playing the politics too much and forgetting who we are just to win. F–k winning. F–k looking cool. F–k being cool,” he said. “Jay Z, call me, bruh. You still ain’t called me. Jay Z, I know you got killers. Please don’t send them at my head. Please call me. Talk to me like a man.” West ended the show after 30 minutes. Read more.
