What’s Open and Closed on Memorial Day in Columbus?
Memorial Day hits a little differently depending on who you ask. For some, it’s a day of deep reflection and remembrance for loved ones lost in military service. If You’ve Got Errands to Run…
Most of the big-name stores in Columbus will keep their doors open on Memorial Day, though hours may vary.
Grocery chains like Kroger, Whole Foods, and Walmart will be open. You can also grab last-minute items from CVS, Walgreens, Dollar General, and Trader Joe’s. Double check your specific location for holiday hours.
Warehouse clubs like Sam’s Club and BJ’s are open, but Costco will be closed.
Planning to dine out or pick up food? Most fast food joints and national chains, including McDonald’s, Starbucks, and Taco Bell, will operate as usual. Just note that some independently owned or franchise locations might be closed or running reduced hours. Call ahead to check in.

What’s Taking a Break
As a federal holiday, Memorial Day means most government-run services will be closed for the day. That includes:
- City, state, and federal offices
- Public libraries
- The U.S. Postal Service: no mail delivery, and post offices will be closed
- FedEx and UPS: no pickup or delivery
- Banks: closed, including branches like Chase and Huntington; ATMs and mobile apps will still work
- The U.S. Stock Market — closed for the day
