A local Columbus man is credited with saving lives during a fire over the weekend. As an apartment building filled up with smoke and screams, Corey Boykin grabbed a 20-foot ladder from his neighbor’s yard, rushed over, and started helping people down on the third floor.

“Yeah, he saved my life, for sure,” said Chase Ray.

Witnesses said that people were forced to jump from their windows to safety. Many residents were trapped and if it wasn’t for Boykin, things may have ended in tragedy.

“Different people jumped at different times,” said Boykin. “Going up as far as I could and coaching them to turn around and back up and come this way because they couldn’t see the smoke.”

Clinton Township firefighters rescued at least two other people inside and guide them through the halls of the burning building. Firefighters say five people had to go to the hospital and one person was admitted for smoke inhalation.

Investigators are working to pinpoint the cause of the fire.
