Joshua 1:8 (NLT) reads, “Study this Book of Instruction continually. Meditate on it day and night so

you will be sure to obey everything written in it. Only then will you prosper and succeed in all you do.”

You may have heard this verse before, yet you are unsure exactly how to follow through on it. Here

are 5 tips to help you delve into that thick book that’s been sitting on your nightstand for a while.

1. Just read it. You don’t need to start at a specific book in the Bible. Even if you have to pick one

out of the table of contents, just read! And before you go digging for deeper meanings and cross-

references, complete a chapter. That’s the first step. Then go back over it and begin studying for

more revelation.

2. Pray for revelation. How do you get revelation or greater insight?  James 1:5 (NIV) says, “If any of

you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be

given to you.” If you don’t understand, don’t be too embarrassed or ashamed to send up a prayer for

wisdom. After all, God, who authored the book using the hands of willing vessels, is the one who can

best illuminate its meaning for you.

3. Read commentaries. It’s never bad to look to others who study the Bible for help (although you

should first read the Word for yourself). Oftentimes, a trusted biblical scholar can give us insight into

the Bible, or at least explain and elaborate on small points and lessons you may not have noticed

before.
